It’s crazy, CRAZY to me how things come full circle. Here I am sitting in Austin, TX – a city that Denise and I visited 7 years ago during a photo shoot for a new brand we were prepping to launch, The Good Ones. I remember walking South Congress and being mesmerized by how ALIVE and COLORFUL everything was. I remember laying in bed with her that night and telling her that if I EVER moved ANYWHERE, it would be here! And she looked at me with that sparkle in her eye and said “maybe someday we can work that out.”

And here I am. Sitting at my desk in an office filled with kindred spirits (truly, if we could have ‘a sisterhood of the traveling pants’ we would), reeling over all the changes, challenges, and CHANCES it took to get me here. To get us all here!  I mean, we just launched our last release of our first ever Spring collection. You only get so many firsts in life, right?! I may be biased, but I think we knocked this ‘first’ outta the park! Best Day Ever was more than I could have imagined and everything I could hope for…

We had over 80 NEW prints! We tried over 60 completely NEW styles. We even traveled for a WF shoot for the first time (aren’t those photos on the beach amazing?!)! I feel like we conquered the world this season. Or at least our little colorful corner of the world!

Sometimes this all feels like a dream. Like, when am I going to wake up in Indiana again!? But that ain’t happening…this is ALL real and I feel like it’s just going to get better and better as we learn and grow!

Ahh, I can’t wait to see what your favorites were from this release. Heck, I can’t wait to see what your favorites are from the entire collection of Best Day Ever!! Ooooo, how about you guys post your fave style from all 4 spring releases, a quick note on why it’s your fave, and we’ll pick a couple of y’all for a special little surprise?!

XO,

Sam

P.S. So…now that our last Spring release is out there… Does this mean we can start sneaking Fall!? 🙂 I know, I know…TOO SOON SAM!

HAPPY POP-UP PARTY DAY! What’s a better way to end the BEST DAY EVER than going out with a BANG?! And by BANG I mean a release that’s a party piñata packed full of fixin’s for FUN, FUN, FUN in the SUN, SUN, SUN. I really wanted y’all to get a big taste of summer with this one, so the prints range from picnic blanket inspired raspberry gingham to bursting tropical blooms (and of course I had to make a Boho Top out of it!). I truly think there is something for everyone in this colorful carousel of a collection!

Like this Beach Boy inspired beauty… The California Dreamin’ Callye Dress was designed for the little beach bunny in your life! We all know our little miss Sunshine winner Callye has a smile that goes for miles, but she also has the sweetest personality with an overwhelmingly obvious LOVE for life (and her mama and her family, of course!). This silhouette with it’s new bodice and comfy knit smocked back is perfect for all the adventures (and vacations) this season brings! Ah, I just love it. And I just love Callye. They’re both my favorite parts of this release!!!

What about high flying pennants, retro geo dots, and ‘kitten paw’ florals for your best summer festival flare?! If so, you’ll be the queen of the boardwalk in our Good Vibes Twirly and Post Card Tank! I truly tried to bottle up the happy-go-lucky vibes of summer in this set, so grab your Beach Shack or Desert Days Souvenir Sacks and hit the beach (or your backyard)! Yep, that’s right, I designed 2 little cross body bags for your kiddos this release, too!! And I gotta say, I really love how they turned out. The perfect balance of cute and cool if you ask me!! Although, most gals at my office would NOT ask me for ‘cool’ advice, but what do they know?! Hehe 😉

Omg I almost wrote this whole post without mentioning SWIM. Have I lost my mama llama mind?!! (Haha, I haven’t brought up LLAMA’s either!!) Swim is so new for me, and honestly was the most challenging thing we’ve done so far at Wildflowers! The fit is so important, most styles went though 5+ samples and size sets to get it right! I can’t wait to hear what you think. A labor of love doesn’t even begin to cover it for these beach beauties…but that LOVE makes it all worth it, don’t you think?!

Okay, last but not least look at this cuteness! Of course I’m talking about MARGO, but y’all can also feast your eyes on that cute little reversible Hip Hip Hooray set!!

I can’t wait to hear your faves from Pop-Ups this week!!
XO,

Sam

Photo shoots are always some of the best times. See, we are a group of creative chicks, but we’re also a group of energizer bunnies who love to get their hands dirty!! At photo shoots we get to run around, play with the kiddos, review fits of different styles, make new outfit combinations, and just see all our hard work -from concept to fabrics, and now photos – come to life! It’s such a treat being able to design the clothes AND work the shoot. In a past life, I wasn’t allowed to help orchestrate photo shoots, even though we were shooting my designs. I always felt such a great disconnect between the designs and the photography, but that’s just not how Wildflowers works. We are a team here, from start to finish, and I LOVE THAT.

So when we began chatting about what sort of SPECIAL photo shoot we wanted to do for our Sunshine Search winner Callye, we couldn’t get THE BEACH out of our minds. The 4th release of Best Day Ever screams boardwalk fun, groovy Beach Boys tunes, and just pure SUMMER, SUMMER, SUMMER. From 6 different dresses, to 6 different swim suits, we’ve got so much cuteness coming your way!

We decided that sunny Seaside, Florida was the perfect location for our spunky Spring release! I was over the moon when Jen, Callye’s mama, was on board to fly to the beach rather than to Austin! It was funny because Jen was just down for whatever!! She’s totally my kind of girl. All she wanted was to meet the crew and see Callye ROCK a photo shoot (AND THAT SHE DID!).

I can still feel the excitement when I first met these ladies. Jen and Callye came downstairs and Jen and I couldn’t help but run full throttle at each other, ending in a huge dancing, laughing, kinda-crying, bear hug! It felt like I hadn’t seen this good friend of mine in SO long, even though it was actually the first time we were ever meeting! I couldn’t believe we got so lucky with this wonderful person and her darling, doll baby of a daughter! PLUS!!! We got a surprise guest, too! Jen’s mama Velma showed up for the fun, too, which made the whole experience extra special, if you ask me!

I want to tell you about all the fun from the shoot RIGHT NOW, but I gotta save some of my stories for later, don’t you think?! We’ve got almost 2 weeks until Spring 4 preview days start!! So if you haven’t planned a pop-up yet, you’re not going to want to miss this release!! It feels like the fireworks after a week long festival to me, basically the part everyone has been waiting for! Don’t miss out by not showing up! <3

XO,

Sam

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks. I’ll try not to bore you with the endless details of birthdays and brunches and parties and releases…just kidding. That’s all I’m gonna write about today! But before I jump into all the celebratory fun I’ve been having, I wanna scream from the rooftops that RELEASE 3 IS HERE!!! The world just got a lot more colorful (see all that new cuteness here!).

ANYWAY… My baby girl celebrated her first birthday. WOW. What a sentence! I’m not sure I ever imagined saying those words!! But now I can’t imagine NOT saying those words, does that even make sense?!

Her party was “rainbow donut” themed because I think you have to have some sort of cheesy theme at a first bday party, right?! I probably brought enough cheesiness just by being the ring leader for the decor! I couldn’t help myself when it came to all the cuteness at Target, Meri Meri, Amazon, etc!! And, of course, we had donuts galore!! I went to 3 different donut shops to make sure we had the perfect assortment (and WAY too many leftovers). Margo was decked out in her rainbow best in a sweet bubble from Eleanor Rose, our sister company.

The day was filled with treats, pinatas, and presents, but the absolute best part was seeing so many people show up to celebrate her! I never in a million years thought Mark and I would move to Texas and create this whole new world for ourselves, complete with a baby girl and friends that truly feel like family! A family that made Margo’s birthday feel so special. A family that makes me feel like the luckiest girl in the world every single day.

We turned the corner after Margo’s bday and it was MY bday (and also April Fools, and ALSO Easter this year). It was a wonderful blur of birthday brunch and backyard shenanigans, complete with sprinklers, kiddy pools, and beautiful weather!

And literally 2 days later, Spring release 3 happened! I guess they say good things happen in threes, right?! But I think we’re always in the middle of about a dozen good things, so maybe that expression doesn’t even apply?! All I know is I’M SO PUMPED ABOUT SPRING! It’s brought so much joy, BIG CELEBRATIONS, and cuteness…and there’s more coming. But I won’t start talking Spring 4 now, I gotta stay focused on our current release or at least as focused as Sam McDonald can be!?

Until next time…
XO,

SAM

Sometimes starting a new collection or release is just sooooo hard. Now, don’t worry… I always get there…eventually, but the struggle can be SO real sometimes!

Now that I told you how tough it can be, let me tell you how EASY Spring Release No. 3 was for me! Crazy, right!? I know, I know, you aren’t used to me saying that the colors just came to me…but they truly did this time! I knew I wanted a romantic, airy-feeling release this Spring. And once I sat on the floor with my boxes of Pantones, the hazy shades of coral and lagoon-like shades of blue and green appeared to me!

I think it was magic. Or maybe it was Denise (I’d like to think she’s a guiding hand in all I do.) Or maybe I should just take the credit for these “smooth like water” shades, but it just felt like everything fell perfectly into place.

Once the colors were nailed down, I started pulling the prints that felt soft, vintage, romantic, and UNIQUE. I always choose a plethora of florals and then slowly whittle them down to the perfect balance—a mix of tight calico florals, big splashy roses, and spacious botanical prints with butterfly accents! Then I find my novelties! At the beginning of the season I made a little “road map” of all the cute “character” or “conversational” prints I wanted to find and use…which was a totally new thing for me! But there was so much cuteness I wanted to cover that the list was an absolute necessity (especially for my new Mom brain)! Let’s see, we’ve crossed off unicorns, dragonflies, teacups, lemons, rainbows, donuts, bunnies, chicks, ladybugs, rain boots, umbrellas, and strawberries…and we’re just getting started!

Let me introduce you to the Spring Release No. 3 novelties that make my heart go pitter patter all over the place! First my little swans came a swimming… I haven’t worked with a swan print in YEARS, so bringing back this beautiful memory (My last collection with Denise had swans <3) in a new way was very special to me. I love their smooth Snow White bodies with apricot feathers, against the Eggshell Blue ground…surrounded by all that pretty navigate green!! And the lily pads!! Ahh…I’m a lover of details and this print takes the crown!! And when I mixed it with the soft sweater knit bodice (I love textures!) I was in heaven. The Swan Lake Dress is everything I ever dreamed of.

Now, even more MAGICAL, we have our little mermaids!! Part of me loves this THE MOST because The Little Mermaid was hands down my favorite Disney movie growing up. You can still find me belting the words to “Part of Your World” at night when getting Margo in her pjs (she won’t stay still on her changing table unless I’m entertaining her with a tune!). So, it was a no brainer that mermaids HAD to make an appearance somewhere. The other reason I just adore this print is because their hair reminds me of Troll dolls too! I grew up loving those weird little dolls and then years later I meet Denise and she collected them growing up too. One day she brought in her entire collection for me to have. Probably a little silly, but I just loved that we were weirdos that collected these dolls 15 years a part.

Lastly, hello watercolor brush strokes! On soft jersey knit!! When I colored this print up, I had to step back and stare. I just adore the mix of colors, and the way the distressed stripes look on a knit! Using this dreamy technicolor stripe as a superstar for this release was a snap! It begs to be an all over print, so I decided to showcase it on the comfy Betty Dress, and the knit trapeze top!

There are SO many more details I want to tell y’all about. But I think it might be better if you just go to a Pop-Up Party and see (and FEEL) for yourself! There’s so much texture mixed into this romantic, watercolor release…ahh. My words, as rambling as they are, will not do it justice. Trust me!!

On that note….Pop-Up Parties begin TOMORROW (AND it’s a very special little lady’s 1st birthday tomorrow too…MARGO!) Fingers crossed you fall in love with this dreamy release like I have.

XO,

Sam

I am SO pumped up today! I’ve got sand, surf, and our little miss SUNSHINE on my mind! Y’all didn’t forget about our contest winner, Callye, did ya?! I mean, how could you with those dimples and sparkling eyes?! We are so excited that this weekend we finally get to meet her and her lovely mama, Jennifer, in sunny Florida! Yes, you heard that right… Our original contest stated we’d be flying 2 lucky ladies down to Austin to hang out on our turf, buuuut…we got a crazy hair of an idea that our 4th and final release of the season needed a beach! Not just any beach, but the white, beautiful sand of Seacrest, Florida. I reached out to Jen ASAP because I definitely wanted to give her the Austin experience, if she’d prefer that! But this mama was totally on board, especially when I said WHY we wanted a beach…to shoot SWIM, of course!

Yes, you heard that right! I finally got to design swimwear. I can’t believe it. You have NO idea how long Denise and I wanted to design swim, but we never felt confident in getting the fit/function of it all right. Well, I decided to dive in, with the help from Mano, my tech design partner! After months of samples and samples and more samples, I think we’ve created something really fun and unique for your girls. MUCH more on that later, back to BUSINESS (because I’m all about business).

So Kate (photographer), Caroline (creative director), Andrea (creative strategist), Erin (graphic designer, photo assistant), and I are flying out on Sunday to meet, greet, and have a lovely time with these two! I just can’t wait to meet them and hug their cute necks! I have so many things I’m excited about, but I think I mostly can’t wait to just go to dinner and hang with these sweet people. Wildflowers has brought so much beauty into my life, but the people…the people are everything. I just know Jen is going to be another soul sister of mine! And Callye, well, I’m going to put her in my pocket and keep her forever! Or at least I’m certain I’ll want to!

Okay before I go, there’s one more thing I just gotta tell ya about. You guessed it…BEST DAY EVER RELEASE NO. 3! I know, you’re probably thinking “Sam, slow down!”  – but I can’t! Preview Pop-Up Parties start March 20th! Which just so happens to be the first day of Spring AND Margo’s 1st birthday! So I know it’s going to be the best day ever! Until then, take a look at these little sneaky sneaks and tell me what you think! This is the release where I really FELT I was coming into my own…so I hope you love it and feel that as much as I do!

XO,

SAM

Word on the street is you guys are digging release 2?! You have no idea what a relief that is. Ha, and now I can begin to worry about Spring 3… It’s a bit different. But more on that later!

Sooo… This was a BIG release! HUGE, actually. Did you notice all of the little novelties and vintage-y florals? What about those little peeps!! Omg, I used to eat those UP during Easter as a kid, so I had to add a nod to those too-sweet-for-life marshmallow chicks. I wonder, what is your favorite part about this release? I have a feeling it’s the rainbows. And I cannot blame you for that! They’re so darn HAPPY. Actually, that’s what I love most about this release…how HAPPY it all feels.

And if you know me, happy is what I’m all about. I remember being a senior in high school and being asked “what do you want to be when you grow up” and my response was always  “happy.” I never had any expectations of making lots of money or owning fancy cars one day… Heck, I would have never even uttered the words “designer” back then. And now that seems like a century ago. How lucky am I to say that I grew up to be what I always wanted to be? HAPPY.

ANYWAY. Something that made me down right giddy was watching Margo model these precious bubbles! When I started Spring, you KNOW I was SO ready to design baby bubbles. I mean, what else was Margo going to wear all Spring and Summer long?! So seeing her in them at the shoots has been pretty indescribable. My cutest creation + the little works of art I’ve been making for years = total magic.✨ It’s been fun dabbling in different designs and different fabrications. For this release I tried 2 different french terry styles and one woven! It’s been interesting striking the balance between too many details for a little baby (I never want to overwhelm the MOST adorable part of any outfit…the child!) and enough to make it feel special, so special your babe HAS to have it! But I guess that’s the tricky part when I design anything… Striking that balance!

I think I’ve said this before, but this Spring is really like a big ol’ (BEAUTIFUL) science experiment for me. I tried SO many different things, updated designs from my past, and kinda re-defined what our releases look like. I can’t wait to show you what I mean in Spring 3 with a fresh batch of “smooth like water” colors! Ahhh…broken record time, but…I CAN’T WAIT TO SHOW YOU. I’m so HAPPY I get try all of these new fabrics, colors, styles, etc., with you!! You know that quote that goes “What if I fall? Oh, but my darling what if you fly?” I feel like that sums up this little dream come true to me. I’m always worried I’ll fall, but y’all always make me feel like I can fly.

Thank you SO MUCH for that. The best is yet to come, trust me!

XO,

Sam

Sometimes when we’re quiet, it just means we’re thinking…

Not too shabby, right!? We have been planning and postponing this contest all season long, ever since a certain little Facebook group POPPED the idea in my brain! We have no lack of ideas or creativity around here, it always just boils down to manpower and time. Oh time, how you’re always slipping through my finger tips…

ANYWAY! I can’t wait to see your little flowers flood our inbox! And I can’t wait to meet the special duo that gets to hang with us, see me jump around like a fool for the perfect shot, and stuff our faces with delicious Austin cuisine afterwards!!

XO,
SAM

PS. The first person that says ‘Sunshine Search’ 10x fast AND posts a video to our FB will win a little something! I know it’s silly, but dang that’s hard to say!

And just like that, we’re half way through November. Time is flying these days and I need constant reminders to stop and smell the roses…

But who’s got time for sniffing flowers when there’s custom dresses to make, nifty giftys to send out, our first Spring photo shoot on Thursday, and about 50 colors split between two palettes I can’t decide on for next fall. Yep, Fall 2018 is proving itself to be a little trickier than I imagined. It’s hard. Like really, really hard sometimes. I know I make it look just terribly easy (please read that with a heavy dose of sarcasm), but the pressure is on. I had to make Spring 2018 better than Fall 2017 and now Fall 2018 has to be better than them both. How can one person keep outdoing themselves?! I don’t know, but these are the thoughts constantly twisting in my brain.

Anyway… Holiday is here (you’re like duh Sam, it’s been out for over a week)! So what did you think? A little funky, right?! I stepped out of my casual comfort zone and into a festive and fancy state of mind! There are so many little details that make it special to me. I have a list of things I was wondering if you noticed…

  1. Did you see the pink partridges?! I love traditional holiday novelties (and birds!) so I definitely wanted to give a nod to the 12 Days of a Christmas tune, but it wouldn’t be Wildflowers without a spoonful of whimsy! So I colored those little birdies Powder Pink and tossed them with blooming roses and seasonal foliage. You’ll find these sweet tweets flittering on the skirt of the Christmas Card Dress.
  2. Sparkle buddies! These shiny mirror like buttons are some of my favorites from the past. Denise and I always saved these for the most special designs, so choosing them for holiday was a no brainer! ‘Eye spy’ them on the Jolly Pinafore Top, the Keepsake Tunic, and of course, both of the Hostess Exclusive items!
  3. Velvet is everywhere right now. Come on, we both know we want those jewel toned velvet boots or those solid velvet shift dresses! Well, I wanted velvet for your kiddos too, but I also know this fabric can be a little grown up looking. So I decided to go with a soft stretchy knit velour instead! This fabric is known for it’s lux shine, making whatever color it is almost multidimensional. The deep harbor blue velour bodice on the Good Tidings Ballet Dress took this frock to a whole new level! And the Hey Jude Flares are the pants my dreams are made of. Where is my size?!
  4. Reverse, reverse! I think by now you might have noticed I LOVE to make stuff reversible. More bang for your buck if you ask me! So take a gander at the Tinsel Vest, flip it to one side for a velvet dotted ‘upholstery’ fabric or turn it around for that dazzling navy floral that’s featured on the Winter Waltz and the Mandy Dress.
  5. Tulle touches for days! I love tulle. LOVE it. I don’t think it’s ALWAYS the right fabrication though, it’s gotta be saved from the right moment and the right season. I decided to take this soft mesh fabric and sprinkle it about some old favorites (hello Poinsettia Clara😍) and also add it to some new styles like the Keepsake Tunic (my fave), the polar express jacket, and tucked beneath the tiers of the Good tidings Dress!
  6. Sentimental silhouettes… A few months ago (back in…April I think?) I was designing holiday, just had a baby, and I was spending a lot of time thinking about all the mama’s who have inspired me over the years. Of course Denise is at the top of that list, but there have been so many wonderful ladies I’ve met over the years that have made an everlasting impact on me as well. The women who followed me from one dream to another, supported me regardless of the brand I was working for. During this time, I couldn’t help but think of Mandy. If you knew her— lucky you! She was too funny, too thoughtful, and gone TOO soon. While I didn’t know her as well as SO many did, I felt her loss immensely. And I know that New Years Eve will never be the same. I know it’s not much, but I designed the Mandy dress in her honor. So when you grab it this season (and heck, anytime of year!) think about the silly cat lady that would do just about anything to make you laugh. Think about friendships you’ve made over children’s clothes. And think about all the happy you can spread in this world of ours, just like she did!

Alright, time to go cross something off this ever growing list of mine! I’ll be blaring the new TSWIFT if anybody needs me… 😉

XOXO,

Sam

It’s almost the most wonderful time of the year! Well, technically it’s still 2 months away…but around here we are in full on holiday mode! With Pop-Up Parties starting TODAY, we have so much to be cheerful about, don’t you think!? Our 4th and final release of Written in the Stars is here! I honestly can’t believe it. I never thought August 1st would get here and now I’m on the verge of waving goodbye to our first Wildflowers Collection, ever. How does time go so fast and so slow all at the same time? Does anyone know the answer to that??

When I started designing the 4th release, I wanted to make sure it was geared towards all the fun holiday activities that come along with this splendid season! I think there’s something for everyone and every occasion, from Christmas cards to fancy holiday shows and everything in between. I started with your typical green and red palette and slowly shifted the shades from bright tango red to this sweet pink toned Sangria and my green morphed into a deep jewel toned blue-green that felt so luxurious and bold to me. Of course I couldn’t just use those two gorgeous colors so I threw in Peridot for a more traditional shade of green, and used Twilight Blue, Powder Pink, and Chateau Rose from the 3rd release to balance it all out. I wanted to make sure there were items that could be worn past the season too, so you’ll see a few navy based items, abstract Christmas tree prints and so much more!

One of my absolute favorite items is the Lala Tiny Dancer Top. This simple knit little number features retro starburst print on the bodice and an adorable vintage ornament print on the skirt. Back in March when I found this ornament fabric I knew I had to find a way to incorporate it into my first holiday release. You see, my old design partner and best friend, Denise, was 100% over the top during the holidays! I mean, the moment December was here she couldn’t think of anything else besides 1.) shopping, 2.) decorating, and 3.) spoiling those around her like CRAZY. All month long we would spend a couple of hours working in the AM, then we’d hit up Target, Big Lots, William Sonoma, Von Maur, and all the other randoms stores on her list… Always on the hunt for the PERFCT gifts and the PERFECT ornaments for each and every person coming to her annual Christmas Extravaganza. This was her favorite time of year and she made it mine, too. I grew up not loving Christmas so when I began working with Denise so many years ago, she really opened my eyes up to all the wonderful things the season truly could be! And ever since then I’ve had this ever-growing LOVE for the season and also this ever-growing ornament collection that I add to every year! All thanks to her. Gosh, I have so much…so so much…all thanks to her. Anyway…

In honor of Denise and the joy she spread each and every Holiday season, we decided to do some joy spreading of our own—introducing the 12 days of Nifty Giftys! Every day during our Preview Pop-Up Parties we will be posting on Instagram a cutie sneak of our 4th release with a fun question to answer! At the end of each day we’ll pick someone randomly to win a little nifty gifty! It could be some buttons or trims or fabrics or a messenger bag or..or..or.. something fun and something special, picked just for you! Heck, you might even get a little note with my terrible handwriting all over it! Haha, I hope that doesn’t discourage you from playing along?!

I’ll end this where I always do…I can’t believe any of this! I can’t believe you all allowed me to design for your gals…again! What a freaking honor it is!! And as I stare at Spring Pre-production samples across the room, I just cross my fingers and my toes that I can keeping making fun, youthful, and fabulous styles to dress your little ladies in!

XO,

SAM
